Only about half of Canadians wash hands after using washroom

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Take a look at your hands; where have they been lately?
A new study on personal hygiene isn’t overly flattering for Canadians. The global study on cleanliness and influenza suggests only 54 per cent of us wash our hands at least five times a day — we are fourth on a list of 12 countries ranked by the Global Hygiene Council.
That concerns people News1130 spoke to on the streets of Vancouver:
“It’s funny when you go into the men’s washroom, you see some people taking a pee and some men wash their hands and some don’t,” says Stephen, who describes himself as a frequent hand-washer.
“It doesn’t really gross me out,” he adds. “I’m not touching that person, I’m not shaking his hand so, it’s his own germs — it’s his own business if that’s what he wants to do, right? I don’t worry about that.”
But others do worry. Alex lives in an apartment building and often thinks about the shared space.
“If I go down and use the laundry room, there are so many different germs on door handles in an apartment — everyone is opening doors and closing doors. So if I go down the hallway and use the laundry, when I come back into my apartment, I will wash my hands,” he tells us.
Canada did better in the rankings when it comes to household hygiene, placing second behind the fastidious Brits.
