Number one complaint against RCMP: 'They're rude'

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Apparently, the “P” in RCMP doesn’t stand for polite.  The RCMP watchdog dealt with just under 4,000 complaints last year and more than 19 per cent of those calls fell under the category of “Attitude.”

That means officers were either dismissive, rude or lacking empathy.

Laura Colell with the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP says attitude has been number one for a long time.  “The most common complaints we receive is pertaining to rudeness.  It’s, ‘I’m not happy with the way I interacted with a member of the RCMP.”

Rounding out the top five complaints are the quality of criminal investigations, improper arrests, incidents arising from traffic stops and police physical abuse.  Incidents involving alcohol or drugs and mishandling property also made the list.
