General Gordon elementary to be knocked down

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) -The Vancouver School Board has voted to demolish General Gordon elementary, against the wishes of its Kitsilano neighbours who believe it should be saved for its heritage value.

Ken Denike was the lone trustee to side with the neighbours, saying the 100-year-old school is part of a community-based program. “Given that it was part of a pilot project that it’s intended to work with the community, it should have community approval. And that very community wanted to retain much of the school,” he insists.

He also believes the new school’s design doesn’t fit with the neighbourhood. “I generally support modernizing and replacing. But there’s not an awful lot of real good heritage in that area. This is Kitsilano, Vancouver’s first neighbourhood.”

The school board says building a new school is more cost-effective, than fixing the old one.
