Man in Motion in Ottawa for 25th Anniversary Relay

By

The original “Man in Motion” is bringing his 25th Anniversary Relay to the capital, celebrating a quarter of a century of effort to improve the lives of those with spinal cord injuries.

Rick Hansen is in Ottawa for four days as part of a relay that will see more than 7,000 medal-bearers helping to retrace the steps of the first “Man in Motion World Tour.”
Hansen made a stop at Rideau Hall Wednesday where he paused to remember being welcomed to the capital 25 years ago.

“It was an absolute honour to be received by everyone with such incredible enthusiasm, including the Prime Minister (at the time) who contributed $1M that helped inspire me as we continued to go across the country in the middle of winter,” he said at a reception inside the governor general’s residence.

He later presented David Johnston with a commemorative medal, thanking him for his humanitarian work.

Hansen said this renewed effort in 2011 has the potential to inspire a whole new generation to get involved and make a difference.
He will be in the capital through Friday and will move with the relay to Smiths Falls on Saturday.
