Province says no to Woodlands compensation

By

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – People who were abused at the Woodlands School for the developmentally disabled asked the premier for compensation in person at the Legislature today.

Christy Clark told them there wasn’t anything she could do for them but she was touched by their stories.

Abuse survivor Gregg Schiller was disappointed by her response. “A lot of these people can’t handle the rejection. They feel re-victimized and abused again by their own government who is lying to them and stalling for justice.”

Abuse survivor Bill McArthur was offended by the premier’s response. “I can consider it another continuation of the abuse that survivors have gone through for years.”

On August 1, 1974 the law that allows victims to sue the province was changed. Only people who left the school before the date are eligible for money.

McArthur missed the cutoff by 10 days and NDP leader Adrian Dix says he and others like him should get paid.  “The governments response frankly wasn’t very respectful to the Woodlands survivors today and that’s disappointing but we are going to continue to work on this.”

The 133-year-old school was torn down earlier this month.
