SFU, UVic, and UBC get high marks

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC schools are once again getting top marks in the latest Maclean’s Magazine university rankings.

Maclean’s ranked Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria first and second in the Comprehensive category, while UBC placed third in the Medical Doctoral category. Catherine Bradbury with the Maclean’s Intelligence Unit says this is the ninth time SFU has nabbed the top spot and it’s thanks to a number of factors:

“In terms of grants; grants to medical science programs, humanities, they come first. Big reputation; [SFU] comes second of all the universities. That’s a huge reputational survey we do,” she explains.

Of the smaller institutions, UNBC ranked third in the primarily undergraduate category, thanks in part to its intimate class sizes.

Bradbury tells us even Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops received a special mention. “Thompson Rivers offers a four year degree in Adventure Studies, which involves heli-skiing, white-water rafting [and] travelling to Chile.”

She jokes had she known about the program earlier, she would have enrolled herself! The 21st annual Maclean’s university issue hits newstands tomorrow.
