We could see lowest trick-or-treater turnout in two decades

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Why are trick or treaters disappearing at Halloween? It’s nothing ominous, unless you’re terrified by demographics.

Statistics Canada suggest we could see the lowest trick-or-treater turnout in more than 20 years. The reason is the shrinking number of five to 14-year-olds in Canada. That age group is down 10 per cent in the last few years alone and we have the smallest number of kids that age since 1988.

At least one woman News1130 spoke to this morning has noticed it. “We used to get around 200, at least, every night. Now, maybe we get 90.”

This man suggests parental fear might also play into it. “It’s not safe anymore. No trust in the public.”

Some parents are choosing safe indoor events at community centres or at the mall rather than going door-to-door on Halloween night.

Halloween weather

The big thing for parents is the weather; dressing up the trick-or-treaters gets a little more difficult when you have to cover the kids up in a heavy coat and ask them to carry an umbrella.

News1130 meteorologist Russ Lacate is looking into the long range forecast.

“At this time of year, getting the forecast correct on Day 1 is a bit of a challenge, so your Halloween outlook is a ‘best-guess’ at this stage,” he explains. “But for the weekend, I’d say party-goers might want to incorporate a waterproof layer into their costumes.”

“By Halloween, [we’re expecting] less-than-goulish weather. I’m calling it cool, dry, and partly clear on the 31st. It looks like we’ll escape the rain,” he adds.
