Some tips for a Halloween costume on a budget

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Don’t be a Halloweenie! There’s still time to get that costume done in time for the parties this weekend. News1130 is talking to the pros about getting it done “on the cheap.”

If you’re still running around with a Cheerios box and a knife pretending you are a “cereal killer,” designer, blogger, and prolific do-it-yourselfer Meg Allan Cole suggests you might want to freshen up your look a little.

“Some of the biggest trends this Halloween are still celebrities and pop culture,” she explains. “People are loving to be their favourite movie or TV icon, both men and women. So, we’re seeing a lot of pirates, zombies, vampires, and a ton of superheroes.”

’80s retro is also ripe for the picking this year, and very easy when it comes to DIY.

“People are really nostalgic, so we’re getting some throwbacks, which is kind of fun. And people are doing it themselves; over 50 per cent of people who are going to dress up are planning on making it themselves this year,” adds Cole.

“I’m seeing a lot of love for New Kids on the Block, Ghostbusters, and the Footloose remake. I think people are really loving jumping back to their favourite childhood movie. That’s something you could easily do at a Value Village in the ‘gently worn’ section and then bringing in some new accessories or making it from scratch.”

Cole has posted instructional videos on her website.

“I took one of the big movies this year, Bridesmaids, and showed how you could take a gaudy bridesmaid or wedding dress and do that,” she explains. “Or, you can do a zombie bride which is really big for ‘The Walking Dead’ fans. Those are two really fun, hot-button costumes you can do using just one dress. I think they’re awesome because they are also looking out for your wallet.”

In another video, Cole hops in her DeLorean and heads back to the past for “some totally tubular 80s costumes” ideas.
