Getting the community to help the homeless

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The goal is to outfit each and every homeless person in Metro Vancouver with the essentials they need to make it through the winter.

Sara McKenna is the co-founder of the Get Warm Project, and says the premise is simple.  “It’s a blanket drive, but we are accepting all warm goods,” she ways.  “That extra blanket you have sitting on the couch, it could be used to keep someone warm.”

McKenna came up with the idea to involve the community as a whole in helping the homeless.  “We’ve already compiled a list of local businesses that have stepped up to host donation boxes.”

Every two weeks she’ll do a pick-up and collect all the items, then pass everything over to Union Gospel Mission to distribute.

She adds with thousands of people living on our streets, a lot still needs to be done.

“There are approximately 2,000 to 3,000 homeless people in Metro Vancouver right now.  So my personal goal is to get about 3,000 scarves, mittens, jackets, and blankets.  The target is to make sure every single one of our community members who are at risk is prepared to survive and stay warm.”
