Vision Vancouver calls for renters’ database

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – If the property you’re thinking about renting is owned by a landlord from hell, Vision Vancouver wants you to know about it before you move in.  The party is proposing an online landlord database to keep tenants safe.

The most-high profile case of that type of landlord was in Abbotsford when Brian Tjepkema’s family was terrorized by the homeowner who lived in the suite below them.

At one point Paramjeet Jandu put cooking oil all over his tenants’ suite and threatened to turn on the stove.  “Screaming matches on the phone, lots of swearing, language we didn’t want our kids to hear,” says Tjepkema.

Jandu would also stand at the end of the driveway and stare at them.  He also threw a sledgehammer through their window.

That landlord was sentenced to two years in jail, but not all cases are that extreme.

Vision Vancouver Councillor Tim Stevenson says this database is about giving renters more information before they move in to a new property.  “If there are any outstanding work orders or outstanding problems, anything that requires work.”
