Toronto remembers: List of Remembrance Day ceremonies

TORONTO, Ont. – Canadians will pay homage to our fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, with ceremonies across the country.

Ontario’s Ceremony of Remembrance will be held at Queen’s Park starting at 10:45 a.m. Friday.

In Toronto, city-run services will be held in many neighbourhoods in and around downtown Toronto. The public is invited to attend these events, most of which are free. Click here for more details.

For those unable to attend, the Remembrance Day Service at Old City Hall will be shown live on CityTV and CityNews Channel.

Below is a list of ceremonies/services on Nov. 11:

Ontario’s Ceremony of Remembrance
Time: 10:45 a.m.

Swansea Town Hall Service:
Time: 10:45 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.
Followed by reception and Remembrance Day Films in the 2nd Floor Council Chamber to 12:00 noon.

Fort York National Historic Site (city-sponsored):
Time: 10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Fort York and the Toronto Chapter of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire present the ceremony at Strachan Ave. Military Cemetery. Military costumed staff from the Fort will be in attendance, while a processional parade will make its way from the parking lot to the cemetery. The ceremony will honour soldiers who fell in the War of 1812, the Rebellion Crises, Crimean War, Northwest Rebellion, South African War, two World Wars, Korean War and recent conflicts.

Other Toronto events:

CN Tower
Time: 11 a.m.
The CN Tower will be lit in red, representing the colour of the poppy, and flags on the property will be flown at half-staff. Two minutes of silence will also be observed starting at 11 a.m. The poem, In Flanders Fields, will also be read. It will also offer complimentary admission to the look put and glass floor levels to any visiting Canadian veterans, Legion Hall members and members of the Canadian Armed Forces (who will be required to show their membership cards).

A Concert of Remembrance (presented by Nine Sparrows Arts Foundation):
Time: 7:30 p.m. – 8:45 p.m.
The concert features the High Park Choirs of Toronto (Conductor Zimfira Poloz, Brendan Cassin on trumpet, duo-pianists Popov & Vona, music director Eric N. Robertson, and soloists and choir from the Christ Church Deer Park), with a special guest appearance by John McDermott. Click here for more details.

The Toronto Zoo’s 26th Annual Remembrance Day Ceremony
Time: 10:55 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Veterans and the general public are invited to join in remembering and honouring wartime sacrifices that Canadians have made for the country. Click here for more information.

Markham – Thank You Vets
Time: 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the Town of Markham’s ceremony honouring Canada’s veterans, which will feature presentations by The Suburbanaires and Youth Poetry Winners.

Vaughan – Remembrance Day parade and ceremony
Time: 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Hosted by the 414 Royal Canadian Legion, the parade will form in Market Lane on Woodbridge Avenue and begin its route at 10:45 a.m. The ceremony will follow at 11:00 a.m. in front of the Cenotaph on Wallace Street. Click here for more details. www.rcl414.ca

A ceremony will be held in the council chamber of the Mississauga Civic Centre, while the laying of wreaths will take place at Mississauga Celebration Square

Brampton – Royal Canadian Legion services:
-Branches 15 and 609 will be at the Meadowvale Cemetery Chapel (7732 Mavis Rd.) at 7:55 a.m.
-Branch 15 will be at the Memorial Square Cenotaph at City Hall (2 Wellington St. W.) at 10:45 a.m. for a parade and service.
-The Korea Veterans Association of Canada (Unit 23) host a Service of Remembrance at the Meadowvale Cemetery, Korea Veterans Wall of Remembrance at 10:30 a.m.
