Civic candidates ‘running on fumes’ today: Former mayor

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Former Vancouver mayor Larry Campbell knows what the pressure is like for candidates across the Lower Mainland today.

Campbell, who is now a senator, says the candidates will spend every minute until 8 p.m. mainstreeting, talking with the media, and trying to get every possible supporter to the polls.

“It’s huge and it’s sort of like running a race, it’s the buildup, this is the pinnacle of it, and so everything that you’ve done is geared toward getting your message out, getting your word out, getting your name out,” he explains.

He says all the hand-shaking and baby-kissing can take a serious toll on candidates’ health.

“Near the end of it, there is not a lot of energy left,” he says. “I mean, you’re running on fumes, there’s just no question about it. You’ve been going [since] at least September, 24/7.”

Luckily, Campbell says, after the media frenzy dies down the winners have two weeks before they are sworn in to get some much-needed rest.

“You’re exhausted the day after, and yet I think it’s at that point that you realize that it doesn’t shut off, because now people want to talk to you and it goes with the game, but there’s a couple of weeks there where you can heal, and get your energies back.”
