Deep quake measuring 6.2 shakes Bolivia’s interior

LA PAZ, Bolivia – A 6.2-magnitude earthquake centred deep underground rattled Bolivia’s northern jungle interior on Tuesday.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake struck La Paz and Cochabamba with far less intensity, more like a magnitude 4 or 5, analyst Guido Avila of Bolivia’s San Calixto geological observatory told The Associated Press.

The temblor’s epicenter was 533 kilometres underground and 60 miles from Trinidad, the provincial capital of Beni state, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 2:48 p.m. local time.

Earthquakes centred deep underground produce far less violence on the surface than shallow quakes of similar magnitude.

Avila said the last quake with a similar magnitude hit Bolivia in 1994 in a rural area north of La Paz and caused no damage or injuries.
