Library to hold speed dating nights for young, bookish types

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Public Library is putting a new spin on speed dating, holding two date nights of “Read Dating” where readers can come in with their favourite book.

Lisa Grant with the library says they are hoping to attract singles who like to read and are fed up with the bar scene. Daters need to be between the ages of 19 and 35.

“We wanted to get a younger age group into the library – that’s a group that’s harder to reach,” she explains.

“We’re creating email addresses that they never have to use again after they contact people from the evening, so people’s privacy is assured. They don’t even have to give out their name. We’re making up character names from books.”

Nov. 29 is for straight folks, while Dec. 1 is for the gay community.

Grant says there have been successful events like this in the states, but it’s a first here. She’s received a lot of positive feedback from older folks, and says they may hold a more mature event in the future.

The event is free but registration is required. Visit this page for details.
