Cdn stores should compete with Black Friday: Board of Trade

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Canadian businesses could do more to keep all those Loonies from heading south.

“[Black Friday] does take money out of our local, Canadian [and] BC economy,” says Anita Huberman with the Surrey Board of Trade. “In the end, that affects all of us. It drives prices up when people are spending it outside the country.”

Huberman completely understands why shoppers head south for the deals ahead of Christmas. “Canadian retailers, need to be that much more creative, that much more competitive around pricing, around marketing, around ‘value-adds.'”

She feels some Canadian retailers do a good job of that, but many don’t. “The whole push should have started sooner than this week as we are anticipating the US Thanksgiving and Black Friday.”

Her message to savvy shoppers?

“When you shop across the border, when you shop in a different country, you are taking money out of the local economy and that affects all of us in the bigger scheme of things. When you are shopping for the Christmas holiday, take a look at what’s being offered by your local retailers and the ‘value-adds’ they might be able to deliver so that you’re not spending money driving across the border.”
