Buyer beware of last-minute Grey Cup tickets

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you’re trying to get your hands on some last-minute Grey Cup tickets, you’ll probably have to pay a pretty hefty price, anywhere from $400 to $2,000.

You also may see some cheap deals from online classifieds or brokers, but those steals may actually be scams.

Mark Fernandes with the Better Business Bureau says if the price you paid for tomorrow’s game seems too good to be true, it probably is.

“If you’re buying from scalpers at the event, buying tickets outside the venue can be a game of roulette.  You may be taken to the cleaners because the seats may not be as advertised or they may not be legitimate tickets.”

He advises you to do your research before hand, check if it’s a reputable company or broker and avoid wiring money to anyone you don’t know.

“Sometimes you believe you’re lucky and the reason tickets are so expensive for these types of events is because they are hard to get.  So if you’re in a situation that sounds too good to be true, like the prices are a little bit lower than they should be then you’re probably not lucky at all.”

And despite what you’ve been hearing the Grey Cup isn’t quite sold-out.  Mario Livich with ShowTime Tickets says ticket prices actually dropped about 40 per cent after the Lions won the Western Final.  He says that changed after folks from out of town came in for the festivities.

Livich explains they get daily inventory and you can get in on it for a reasonable price.  “For the type of seats you want, it may or may not fit that price category, if it doesn’t we’ll order them in for you or find a seller.  Don’t stress because prices are very fluid.”

Some tickets are starting at $270 while the best seats are about $1,200.  “This isn’t just about a football game, it’s an event.  You’ll have a lot of people who don’t necessarily know the players’ names, aren’t too sure about CFL rules but they’re there to soak up the atmosphere.”

He’s been selling Grey Cup tickets since 1986 and says this year is probably the most ramped up he has seen fans.
