Vancouver fifth most liveable city in world: survey

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver has cracked the top five cities in an international quality of life survey.

It also grabbed the top spot in North America.

Vienna, Zurich and Auckland have the highest quality of life according to Mercer, an international consulting firm.

Munich is fourth and Vancouver is tied for fifth spot with Düsseldorf, Germany.

Ottawa and Toronto were ranked 14th and 15th, respectively.

Honolulu was the top American city at 29.

Vancouver finished in a tie for 17th under the new category personal safety.

“It’s evaluated and based on 39 criteria such as education, public services, transportation and environment,” said senior researcher Slagin Parakatil. “This year we have used a specific ranking, which is personal safety, which takes into consideration law enforcement, crime, political and internal stability.”

Personal safety is one of the reasons Baghdad is sitting in last place.

“The continued personal safety issue in Baghdad is a major contributor of why it is ranked relatively low,” Parakatil said. “The political instability, a lot of volatile issues going on in the country and their recurrent terrorist attacks against foreigners, locals and expatriates is important in the city.”
