New poll shows the majority of Canadians don’t see Christmas as a religious holiday

A new poll conducted by Abacus Data finds 92 per cent of Canadians will be celebrating Christmas later this month but the majority do not see it as a religious holiday.

Abacus Data CEO David Coletto told 680News the poll shows 40 per cent of Canadians see Christmas as a religious holiday but 52 per cent do not.

“It’s surprising in the sense, the size of it. The number of people who said that,” said Coletto.

However, the poll also showed that 76 per cent of Canadians would prefer to say Merry Christmas rather than Happy Holidays – which has a religious connotation.

“The politically correct thing to do, or we’re told, is to say Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings. Most Canadians aren’t following those guidelines,” said Coletto.

About a thousand people over the age of 18 took part in the on-line poll.
