C. difficile outbreak in Niagara Falls hospital; 3 patients have bug: officials

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – After six weeks of being outbreak free, the Niagara Health System has called a new outbreak of C. difficile in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Officials said three patients with hospital-associated C. difficile have been flagged on Unit D of the Greater Niagara General Hospital.

With new protocol, that’s enough for an outbreak of the intestinal bacteria.

The Niagara Health System ended the last of three deadly outbreaks of C. difficile, plus an outbreak of VRE on Oct. 24.

In all, 102 people fell ill with hospital-associated C. difficile over a five-month period and 37 patients with the bug died.

C. difficile caused the death of seven patients and was a contributing factor in another 11.

Kim Stephens-Woods, vice president of patient services, said it’s “disappointing” to be back in outbreak.
