Kids work together to stay safe while crossing busy streets

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s kids crossing the street under the veil of darkness during the winter. Luckily, their classmates are helping them stay safe.

In addition to the little daylight we’re getting these days, kids are dealing with pouring rain or fog as they make the trek to school. But their classmates can help get them across dangerous streets.

VPD Constable Pat Allen works with the kids and says it’s a key program. “In Vancouver, we have got 35 schools that are active, 37 in total with approximately 1,300 students showing leadership, dedication and commitment to the program. It’s a wonderful program.”

Thanks to a donation of $15,000 from the Vancouver Police Foundation, Patti Bacchus with the Vancouver School Board says the initiative will live on for another two years.

“This important student safety initiative is now into its 75th year. The program started in 1935 after a tragic accident that killed two children who were travelling on their way to school,” adds Allen.
