Couriers swamped thanks to online shoppers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s not just the busiest day of the holiday season; FedEx is calling December 12th the busiest day in the shipping company’s history.  It will move about 17 million packages to over 220 countries today alone.

“That’s up year over year.  We moved about 15.6 million packages last year on our busiest day, so we’re really excited about the growth,” says Vice President Brie Carerre.

“Obviously, this is a seasonal peak from a FedEx perspective, but I think the other thing that is really driving growth is the movement from online shipping.  We expect about 50 per cent of shoppers this year will purchase at least one package online.”

Also, many retailers are taking part in a free shipping day today. Couriers are sending out everything from sweaters to engagement rings.

Carerre says if you want a Christmas parcel to arrive at its destination before the big day, it must be in the mail by December 22nd.
