Saving like Scrooge during the holidays

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You can live like Santa Claus now but save like Scrooge in the New Year.  We’re finding out how to get back on track if your Christmas spending has got a little out of control.

The number one suggestion is to really take stock of your finances, meaning you should try to figure out exactly where you sit.

Blair Mantin with Sands & Associates says there are a couple of options to stay in check.  You could tackle high-interest credit cards first.  “You’ve got a lower dollar value debt that has been hanging around for a long time, you might want to clear that off so it’s not taking mind-space anymore.”

Jeff Schwartz with Consolidated Credit Counselling Services of Canada says you might also want to look past the material items.  “Perhaps there is some great alternatives to the material gifts that don’t cost so much that really show a lot more appreciation for the people you’re giving them to.”

He adds the best way to handle the Christmas shopping crunch is to put money away all year.
