Santa Claus for political office

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A poll shows we are happy with the job Ol’ Saint Nick is doing. His approval rating is far beyond our politicians. It also says where candy canes and religion rank in our holiday plans.

Maybe we should consider Santa Claus for BC’s next Premier…
Then again, if your job was to give out presents and have an overall jolly demeanor, you’d probably be well liked too. Ipsos Reid found 59-per-cent of us strongly approve, 26-per-cent somewhat approve of the job Ol’ Saint Nick is doing.  The other 15-per-cent who disapproved may have been on Santa’s naughty list.

Catherine Dawson with Ipsos Reid says we have many priorities at this time of year, “British Columbians want to believe in Santa and want to have a nice holiday season with family and friends and enjoy some good meals.”

In fact 40-per-cent of us believe in the jolly old elf. But how many of believe in the reason for the season?

Less than a third of people in BC will even reflect on the religious meaning of the holiday and just a quarter of us will attend a religious celebration. That ranks just above the number of us who will leave milk and cookies out for Santa and is less than half of the number of people who will send out Christmas greeting cards.

Food is an important part of our holiday traditions.  Seventy-one percent of us will cook a big meal.
The poll also looked at the popularity of Christmas treats. Candy Canes were the lowest on the list. Only 3-per-cent of us say it’s our favourite.  Shortbread (34%) and eggnog (17%) are the top two.
