Warning to double-check your gas bill

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – A man from Coquitlam is telling other Fortis BC customers to double-check their gas bills. Mark Petriw got quite the shock when he opened up his invoice for December.

It hasn’t even been that cold lately. That’s why Mark was stunned to find his tally three times higher than it was last December.

“The bill was about $160 more that we’d be used to, and it’s right around the holidays, and if some other other families are afflicted by this, that could be the whole Christmas budget, then some.”

He spotted three little letters on the top of the bill: EST, which means his usage was only an estimate. Turns out the meter reader couldn’t find the actual meter so was forced to estimate the cost.

Fortis is reversing the charges and Petriw says the company’s been great. He just wants other customers to be aware, in case they spot the letters EST at the top of their bills too.

Gas meters are read every second month.  Fortis says customers should call if the estimates appear to be too far off.
