Stanley Cup Riot is News1130's top story of 2011

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – After 40 years of Canucks hockey and no Stanley Cup, the team’s third attempt to win a championship ended infamously on June 15th.

Fans rioted, setting fires and looting stores, after the team lost 4-0 to the Boston Bruins. News1130 had a team of reporters downtown, where tear gas was thrown into the crowd.

A number of cars were destroyed as many rioters drank openly in public throughout the night.

The day after the riot it was quiet. A different type of anger set in with people began howling for justice, condemning the rioters, and demanding immediate punishment.

Vancouver Police took abuse because the first charges not announced for more than four months. Recently, the first batch of suspects made their first court appearances with many more to come.

This will probably be one of the biggest stories of 2012, too.
