Parent’s worst nightmare: babies in stroller roll into river

By

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Imagine being out for a nice walk with a friend and your two babies in a stroller. As you walk down a hill, the stroller slips out of your hand. It takes off. You’re left chasing it as it goes over an embankment, landing on the edge of the Vedder River.

Constable Tracy Wolbeck with the RCMP in the Fraser Valley tells us that’s exactly what happened yesterday. “[It submerged] one of the babies for a very short time.”

“Both mothers and a man who had been walking on the trail as well, entered the river and were able to pull the babies out,” she explains.

Other than a sprained ankle for the mother, everyone is okay.

Wolbeck adds she can see how such an accident would happen. “I’m a mother myself and I can’t count the number of times I’ve been to that trail, either pushing my kids in a stroller, riding bikes or just going for a walk. It’s not hard to see how the potential is there for something to happen.”

She says it’s also a reminder to be extra careful.
