Red Cross using social media to educate

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Twitter could be a life-saver; News1130 is speaking with the Red Cross about how social media is helping educate and train people who may find themselves in an emergency situation.

Karen Snider with Red Cross says some high-profile bloggers have become part of their “Twitter-Team” to help get word out, and events like their CPR tweet-ups have proved to be invaluable.

“It was a way for us to invite Twitter users to come and learn how to do CPR,” she explains. “They are people that we don’t know. It is open to the public. We welcome them to use their smartphones during the class. They are tweeting and sharing messages about safety tips that they are learning.”

The response to the sessions have been overwhelming and at capacity. “The second year we expanded them across the country. A lot of them were full as well. It is a fun way to learn a very important skill.”

She says they are also looking for more digital volunteers. You can get in on this by tweeting @RedCrossCanada.
