Crime Stoppers tips help nab dealers, murderers, rioters

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers says anonymous tipsters are helping to crack murders and drug busts big and small, not to mention cases of suspected Vancouver rioters.

Tips are up 46 per cent this year over 2010, and it’s not just fraud and grow-ops people call in about.

Vancouver Police Sgt. Ron Fairweather says the most numerous tips are for drug trafficking, while information on homicides is number five.

He insists those tips do help crack cases, but he can’t give details.

“I can tell you when incidents do happen in this city, whether they are drive-by-shootings, anything big, our tips and our calls come in,” he says. “We are very, very active in getting that information very quickly.”

Fairweather says Crime Stoppers was flooded with tips after the Stanley Cup riot.

“We were better set up and until such time we were taking a tremendous amount of information and then obviously working with the Vancouver Police Department.”

Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers handed out over $17,000 in rewards last year, as tipsters helped police lay 295 charges and seize 16 weapons and over $16 million in drugs and stolen property.

These latest stats were released as part of January being “Crime Stoppers Month” in Canada.

If you have a tip call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit a report online at www.solvecrime.ca.
