Which gender is safer behind the wheel?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As we brace for winter driving conditions, a study has taken a look at which gender is more dangerous behind the wheel. The findings are more ammunition for those who say women are better drivers than men.

The US study called “Women Are Bad Drivers — Fact or Fiction?” was done for 4autoinsurancequote.com. It compares traffic violation, accident and insurance price stats based on gender.

It shows traffic violations are higher for men in nearly every category from seat belt violations to speeding. The study also finds 80 per cent of serious to fatal crashes are caused by men, while women are 27 per cent less likely to cause an accident.

The research echoes a 2009 report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety that found more men than women die each year on the road. But in crashes of equal severity, women are more likely than men to be killed or hurt.
