Local school district demystifies weather closures

By

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – It’s the two words school children love and parents dread: snow day.  With snow in the forecast for Monday, school districts will be keeping a close eye on conditions.

News1130 spoke with one of the lower mainland’s biggest districts about how the decision to close schools is made during wintry weather.  Cheryl Quinton speaks for SD43, the Coquitlam School District, and says reports from school maintenance people, city road crews, and weather forecasters all play a role in deciding whether it’s safe to go to school.

“When the decision is made, it’s posted on the district website as soon after 6 a.m., and is then communicated to major radio stations.”  That includes News1130.com.

We receive the first phone calls and emails from districts everywhere from North Vancouver to Chilliwack, and we announce those closures at the top and bottom of every hour.  We also post the information on our Storm Centre page on News1130.com.
