Taking a snow day from work

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If schools can take snow days, then why can’t offices do the same thing?  Telecommuting tends to spike when conditions get messy.

Weather is a big driver of the revolution, in fact, recent surveys show the practice has gone up by more than 20 per cent.

“This is the type of situation when we see the weather get nasty, to allow people to remain productive and still being able to contribute, keep on top of deadlines and not risk either missing a deadline or just going through the stress of a horrible commute,” says Todd Holowchak with Robert Half International.

But he adds it’s important to set some ground rules first.  “It’s not that easy to say, ‘Go and work from home.’  Deadlines have to be hit, regular meetings have to happen and it does require the employee to go into the office on occasion to maintain that connection.”

Experts say wireless technology is making telecommuting easier than ever to do.
