Good evidence for use of HPV vaccine in boys, government’s vaccine advisers say

By

TORONTO – A federal government advisory body that reviews vaccines is endorsing use of HPV vaccine in boys and young men in Canada.

A newly released statement from the group says the evidence is strong that HPV vaccine prevents males against genital warts, anal cancer and pre-cancerous anal lesions.

The recommendation is specific to Gardasil, the HPV vaccine which protects against four strains of human papillomavirus and is made by drug maker Merck.

The recommendation was made by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, a group set up to give expert guidance on vaccines to the federal, provincial and territorial governments.

But a positive statement from the group doesn’t mean the vaccine will automatically be added to the list of vaccinations provinces and territories provide for free.

It’s now up to individual governments to determine if they want to pay for the HPV vaccine for boys and young men between the ages of nine and 26.
