Whistler room bookings up over last year

By

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – Room bookings in Whistler were up 12 per cent in December, that’s the strongest in five years.  One of the reasons why they’re doing so well is the heavy snowfall this season.

Karen Goodwin with Tourism Whistler says the Olympic afterglow is another factor.  She adds they also invested a lot of money into marketing themselves around the world.

She says a large portion of their international visitors come from the US, the UK and Australia.

“We’re also exploring new, emerging markets.  It takes longer to see the return out of those so we focus some attention on countries like Brazil, India and China to see some growth.”

Goodwin explains people are also starting to take vacations once again after a couple of tough economic years.  She explains January is pacing to be even stronger than December.
