Teen sentenced for killing 15-year-old in high-speed crash

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A teenager has been sentenced for the crash that killed 15-year-old Sanjeeve Sharma in Surrey in April of 2009.
Sharma was a passenger in a speeding car that slammed into an SUV near 128th and 82nd Ave.
The young driver pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing death last year.
He has been given six months of house arrest, 18 months probation, a three-and-a-half year driving ban, and 40 hours of community service.
The victim’s family is not happy. Sanjeeve’s father, Sanjay Sharma, says the sentencing process has put a spotlight on young drivers. He wants the minimum driving age in BC raised to 19.
“When a judge goes to us, in front of the court system, and says, ‘well the 17-year-old’s not at his full capacity to know things,’ then why do we give a driver’s license to people at 16?” he said after the sentencing.
Sharma said he had wanted the young offender to serve jail time.
