Should we lower speed limits on residential streets?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A senior doctor with Vancouver Coastal Health wants lower speed limits on residential streets.

With Vancouver launching its “People are Fragile” road safety campaign, speed is once again being highlighted as a key factor.

Medical Health Officer Dr. John Carsley says drivers have to share the road with cyclists and pedestrians. He says a few km/h can make a big difference.

“If they’re going slower – even if somebody does something foolish – they have a much better chance of not hitting them if they’re going 30 to 40 km than if they’re going 50 to 60,” says Carsley.

He supports efforts by municipalities pushing the province to allow blanket limits of 40 km/h in residential neighbourhoods.

“It’s really something very important because if you’re hit by a car, the speed at which it’s going is tremendously important in terms of whether you’re injured or killed.”

Carsley feels a 40 kilometre an hour limit on residential streets would improve safety for all road users.
