Victim’s husband slams BC court backlogs

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Court backlogs aren’t the only issues stressing out families looking for justice.  A lack of communication with the victim’s family can also lead to a ton of frustration.

The husband of a woman killed in a hit-and-run in Coquitlam last year is concerned over time delays and how that will affect the case against the accused drunk driver.

Charlene Reaveley’s husband Dan says the pre-trial for the accused won’t begin until 2013 and there is concern the case could be thrown out.

He doesn’t want this to drag on much longer.  “It would be nice if it was just cut and dry and dealt with in a timely fashion.  It seems to be getting dragged out and dragged out and postponed,”

He says they sit in court all day not knowing what’s going on.  “You are a sitting duckling; it is kind of a pain.”

Dan has been raising their four children on his own after his wife was killed when she rushed to help another couple involved in a minor crash on Lougheed Highway.

“They don’t seem to have families in mind when they are doing this.  We sat in court during the arraignment hearing all day.  We didn’t even realize they weren’t showing [up].  The judge knew, they could have said something.”

Twenty-six-year-old Lorraine Cruz was also killed that evening, her family has been flying in from Montreal not knowing if appearances will actually be made.
