Scammer trying to cash in on missing DJ

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – Someone is preying on those trying to find a missing DJ in Whistler. The scam involves a person pretending to be Michael Grefner, asking for money to find his way home.

Gary Tennant is good friends with the missing 34-year-old, who was last seen at a village nightclub last month. He has been updating the search for Grefner through Facebook.

“Somebody has decided to email several people in the group to maybe get them to send money via Western Union or some sort of other electronic transaction. They do play on people’s emotions,” he explains.

One request apparently came from Scotland.

“People that are part of this group are all pretty shocked and disgusted and can’t believe that anyone would even consider doing something like this,” he adds.

Meanwhile, Whistler RCMP say the investigation is active and tips continue to dribble in. But there is nothing new to report on his whereabouts.
