Avalanche risk high on North Shore

By

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The avalanche risk is ramping up in the back country around the North Shore mountains.

Tim Jones with North Shore Rescue says the the risk has reached the high category for areas at and below the treeline.

“This hazard probably will be for the next  24 hours, until the snowpack settles and cools,” Jones warns. “We just want to let people know that this is at a very high level.”

He points out a couple of avalanches have already rolled through the backcountry of Mount Seymour [Saturday].

In both cases, people were only partially buried and dug themselves out.

Jones adds a rescue in these conditions would be very difficult.

“Most likely we won’t be able to directly get people because we’ll be at risk too, so we just want to let everybody know that we would have a problem responding to a rescue in avalanche terrain.”
