Protected forest in Chilliwack is facing the axe

By

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – Last year the BC government declared the forest near Chilliwack Lake Provincial Park a protected area for the critically endangered spotted owl. So it came as a surpise to The Wilderness Committee’s Gwen Barlee when a logging company applied for logging permits in the area last week.

“I just shake my head. I am amazed and appalled that the BC government would say, look we are setting aside this habitat and then go off and allow logging within that habitat that is supposed to be used to help recover this bird.”

The permits can be approved as soon as this week, but Barlee is still holding out hope.

“I’m hoping that the government will say this is a bad idea and they won’t allowing logging in the spotted owl protection area. I really hope that is the case because this is a government that has turned it’s back on endangered species.”

There are thought to be less than 10 spotted owls in the wild in BC.
