Some politicians calling for road tolls across the region

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If some politicians get their way, you will have to pay a toll; not just on bridges, but on roads right across Metro Vancouver. They think it’s the best way to pay for TransLink‘s upcoming projects, like the Evergreen Line.

News1130 is finding out commuters are split on the idea.

One man tells us while he understands the cost of infrastructure, he’s fed up with seeing less of his hard-earned dollars. “It just seems to me that the way governments are going, anything they can grab — whenever they can grab it — for the average working person [it means] ‘pay, pay, pay.’ There’s not enough to go around.”

He says putting up tolls would probably make him travel less.

We spoke to another man from Surrey who drives into Vancouver every day for work. He hates tolls but figures if we have to have them, the burden should be spread equally.

“It sucks but I don’t know what else they’re going to do,” he explains. “If they’re going to toll the bridges, they should toll a little bit of everything so everybody pays, not just the people who live on the outskirts.”

Politicians are reviewing the possibility of tolling not only bridges, but also entry and exit points in various parts of the region.
