Public hearing into Mt. Pleasant project to draw full house

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Over 100 people have signed up to speak at a public hearing on Monday to oppose new highrises for the Mt. Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Some of those people held a rally on Saturday, at the very corner in question.

Sandeep Johal is one of the people leading the battle against the developer, Rize Alliance Properties, which envisions two highrises on Kingsway between Broadway and 10th Ave.

She insists it’s not a case of “not in my back yard,” but rather a case of standing up for locals who she says will see little benefit from the project.

“This is a completely ‘for profit’ development,” she explains. “We are not getting any rental units. They were taken out of the original designs. The art space has been removed as well.

“My question is, how is this being justified? It’s additional height, over seven times what’s allowed right now. It’s additional density, over five-and-a-half times what’s allowed now. What are we getting out of it?”

The larger of the two condo highrises, at Kingsway and 10th Ave., would be 19 storeys.

The other highrise is slated to occupy a space made vacant by a huge fire back on Christmas day of 2009.
