Canadians stretch for a good cause

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Canadians are striking their best warrior pose to raise money for arthritis research.

Large-scale yoga “mega-sessions” are being held in 22 communities across Canada as part of Power of Movement 2012.

Suzanne Mueller is with the Vancouver event. “This is a yoga class happening for arthritis research put on by the Arthritis Researcher Foundation. It is to raise awareness and funds for arthritis research.”

“The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to movement and how moving our bodies can be so helpful for arthritis or autoimmune diseases,” adds Mueller.

This is the sixth year for this event. It was started in 2005 by yoga instructor Dorna Chee. She used yoga breathing exercises to help her get through being diagnosed with lupus. Chee thought other people might benefit from yoga to help manage their autoimmune illnesses.

To date, Power of Movement has raised over $1-million benefiting the 4.6-million Canadians who live with arthritis or autoimmune diseases.

Arthritis is among the top three most common chronic diseases in our country. It is the leading cause of pain and work disability in Canada and has an estimated yearly economic burden of $33.2-billion.
