Ottawa to block Air Canada strike and lockout

Update 12:38 p.m: Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt says she will block planned work stoppages at Air Canada by sending two union contract disputes to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Air Canada has given its pilots lockout notice.

The lockout is set to start Monday. The pilots’ union would not accept what the airline called its best offer. Air Canada mechanics, baggage handlers and ground crews are also scheduled to start their strike on what will be the first day of spring break for many people.

With the likelihood two unions will be off the job, many travellers are wondering what they are in for when they go to check in.

Claire Newell with Jubilee Travel calls it a waiting game but notes you may be eligible for a credit through the airline.

“Usually, the information is only available for those who are leaving within the next 24 to 48 hour period,” she explains. “So, even if you’re leaving a week later and you’re worried, you can’t make any changes.”

If you plan to book with another airline, Air Canada does not have to refund the trip and with spring break, the chances of getting a seat elsewhere are slim.

“In the past, other airlines have actually stepped up to help when a strike was announced,” she recalls.  “However, as we reach one of the busiest times of the year, spring break, there may not be as many opportunities for other airlines to help out.”

If you have booked with a travel agent, you can also check to see if you’re eligible for a credit.

Air Canada says it recognizes the inconvenience, noting it’s call centres are being flooded with calls that are resulting in longer than normal wait times.
