March Break: Tips on limiting your roaming costs

By

As travellers head out of town for March Break, below are some helpful tips from Rogers Communications on how to limit your roaming tips when using your cellular device or smartphone.

While roaming outside Canada, you’re accessing services through a foreign cellular network and you can incur incremental charges while talking, texting or emailing with their mobile device.

Here are a few tips (courtesy of Rogers Communications):

1. Get a Roaming Data Pass. Sharing a picture or checking email requires data. You can still share your memorable shots and stay in touch by getting a Roaming Data Pass, which lets you access data services for a day or week and can start as low as $5 and include:

  • Free near real-time text alerts that let you monitor your data usage
  • Data service cut-offs upon data-pass expiration so you never have to worry about “overage” fees

2. Before your trip or even as soon as you arrive at your destination, you can purchase a Travel Pack for voice, text, or both right on your mobile device or by calling your service provider. Regardless of where you are travelling, Rogers has Travel Packs that provide discounted rates for calling and texting. Travel Packs are good for one month from the date of purchase and if you use up the Pack you’ll continue to enjoy discounted rates (per minute, sent text) for your usage until the month is over.

3. Monitor your email and apps. Email, especially messages with attachments, eats up data. Avoid opening or forwarding e-mails with attachments, and turn off Apps that you’re not using to help conserve data.

4. Conserve power. Make sure your device is ready to use, especially during long day trips, by disabling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (turn on Wi-Fi when looking for a hotspot), turning your screen’s brightness down and closing Apps that run in the background.

5. Make sure your data roaming is on. Most devices have the data roaming set to off. If you plan on checking email or using other data services such as web browsing, BBM, MMS, Visual Voicemail and Apps while you are away, turn data roaming on.
