Christy Clark marks one year as BC’s premier

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It was one year ago today when Christy Clark was sworn in as BC’s 35th premier.

You don’t need to be a political scientist to know she has had more than her fair share of challenges in the province’s top job.

Michael Prince with the University of Victoria is surprised by the number of gaffes she’s committed, from speaking out prematurely on senate and crime reform to the ongoing controversy over naming rights at BC Place. Prince warns if she continues like this, she’ll quickly be on the outside looking in.

“She’s not out of the woods and I can’t see yet a magic bullet in Year Two that’s going to magically transform her troubling fortunes at the moment,” he explains.

Clark’s winning of her party’s leadership was largely based on her perceived electability, yet Prince points out her focus on image has become something of a hindrance. “And as things have not gone well, the electability and the photo-op… the positive spin of the premier has now turned out to become, if anything, a bit of a handicap or a bit of a drawback to her style.”

But he isn’t ready to write her off just yet, as a lot can happen between now and the next provincial election, set for May 2013.
