New free app launched to help you recycle

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It may be a challenge for you to drop off your recycling, but now there’s a free app to help.

It’s called weRecycle and it was launched by Metro Vancouver. After you download the app, you enter a search of what you want to get rid of. For example, you type in electronics and a map will highlight the best locations around the region that accept electronics.

The app includes dozens of material categories such as sport equipment, appliances, furniture, electronics, building materials and mattresses.

Board Chair Gregg Moore tells News1130 the goal is to reach a 70 per cent waste diversion rate by 2015. “As a region, we’re up about 55 per cent of all of garbage is recycled or diverted. For Port Coquitlam, we’re about 64-65%, same with Port Moody.”

“Hopefully this app will provide some convenience for people to do the right thing,” adds Moore.

Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Committee, Malcolm Brodie, says in a written statement that recycling is for things that are truly at the end of their useful life. “If your stuff can be used by someone else, you should not be recycling it. weRecycle helps get your used goods into the hands of people who can use them.”

They are asking you to test the app out and provide feedback on their website.
