Commissioner wants better care of former petting zoo animals

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are calls to keep a closer eye on what happens to the former animals of the Stanley Park petting zoo. It comes after goats were apparently sold at auction and slaughtered.

NPA Park Board Commissioner Melissa De Genova is presenting a motion to the board on Monday that would see vet checks as well as reference checks done on anyone wanting to adopt the animals. She says the animals at the zoo are like pets for some people. “I just want to make sure that none of the devastating results that happened to the goats and sheep with that farmer out in Langley happen to the other animals.”

She says the feedback from other commissioners has been mixed. “We really need to do due diligence and follow up on the rest of the animals. The other commissioners, at least some of them, have been asking about the cost of this. They ask me, ‘Melissa, how can we afford to do this?’ And I say, how can we afford not to do this?”

She suggests doing follow-ups with former zoo animals every six months, but would be willing to push that to once a year.

De Genova is inviting people to speak at the meeting on Monday. Anyone willing to voice their opinions is asked to register with the Park Board office.

The Langley farmer accused of selling former petting zoo goats into slaughter is being sued by the Vancouver Parks Board.
