Poll shows nearly 3/4 of Americans want police to arrest man who shot Trayvon Martin

A new poll from CNN shows nearly three-out-of-four Americans want police to arrest the neighbourhood-watch member who shot and killed Trayvon Martin.

The survey also finds three quarters of those asked don’t think neighbourhood watch members should be allowed to carry weapons.

George Zimmerman, who had been patrolling as part of the neighbourhood-watch program, admits to shooting and killing Martin, an unarmed African-American teenager.

Zimmerman told police the teen attacked him and he shot in self defence.

This marks a contrast from Martin’s family and supporters, who say the unarmed 17-year-old was no more threatening than the bag of skittles and iced-tea he was carrying.

Protests have broken out in major cities across the United States following the teen’s death in Florida.
