Several senior NDP staffers resign as Mulcair takes the helm

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS1130) – Newly-elected NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair is dealing with some bad optics as he starts his first day in the House of Commons.

More resignations have been submitted by some of top New Democrat staff members, less than two full days after Mulcair took the lead.

Drew Anderson, the Director of Communications for the Leader of the Opposition, made the announcement at a staff meeting today. This comes a day after the party’s National Director Brad Lavigne decided to leave the party after 10 years of being a key figure.

There has also been word a top adviser in Quebec will be stepping down.

While this may look bad, Toronto MP Andrew Cash says it’s not a jab at the new leader. “I would caution people not to read too much into any of this. I think it’s normal operations, I think regardless of who won our leadership they’d make some changes in their head office, that’s what happens.”

Vancouver MP Don Davies agrees. “When there is a change of direction there is a change of staff, that’s quite normal and expected. I remember under the Liberals they were getting rid of their chief of staff every six months under Michael Ignatieff.”

Lavigne and Anderson have been known to be close with Brian Topp, who lost to Mulcair in the leadership race. However due to their party positions, neither openly backed a candidate.
