First-of-its-kind activity guide for young kids

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – ParticipACTION is out with the first-ever Canadian Physical Activity guide for young children.

The Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for the Early Years (0-4 years) says kids under the age of four need at least three hours of movement throughout the day.

“Just let kids be kids. If they are chasing the cat around the house or playing or even just learning how to put on their pants or put on their socks, that is movement. That has our kids doing the right things, being physically active,” explains Kelly Murumets with ParticipACTION.

She believes most children are exposed to TV and computers too early in life and for too long.

“Move more, sit less and avoid screens. It’s remarkable that we are sending this message for children that are so young because we naturally think of those kids as running and jumping and playing and giggling and in fact, more and more are spending time being sedentary.”

Screen time is not recommended for children under two, while kids between ages two and four should spend less than an hour watching the television.
